Defunct mp4 player

I bought my daughter the mp4 'nano' style cross for Christmas and it has worked fine up until now. However when I tried to charge it on my computer today I got a message telling me that it did not recognise the USB device and that it had malfunctioned. I am unable to charge the player and therefore cannot switch it on. The USB ports on my computer are all working with other devices.
Please help!

This is usually a failure in either the cable or the comms port on the player.

Do you have any other Apple devices with a 30 pin cabkle that you could try it with to eliminate the easy option?
