'File system error'

Anybody heard of this on a MP4 player? My husband has an MP4 player which after operating for about two months has now stopped dead and shows the message 'File system error' at start up. He has reset and reformatted the player twice with no success, just the same message.
Finally he has removed all files and the message 'still' remains the same.
Fatal error or does anybody have any ideas.
I should add he has lost the receipt.

This sounds like corrupt memory of the firmware on the player.

It could be that it was dropped ? Sometimes reflashing it with new firmware helps
